What is Melody Chat?

Melody Chat is both a plaform and open source project. We are run through a collective of contributors, maintainers, and volunteers. Our governance is based on Values Based Consensus (VBC) with a commitment to using conflict resolution to resolve our differences when possible.

The Platform: Our platform is hosted for anyone to use as long as they follow our Accetpable Use Policy. If you would like to host your project's chat on our platform, feel free!

Open Source Project: Behind Melody Chat is the open source project Harmony. Harmony is a fork of Spacebar with a focus of keeping to the project's original langauge, TypeScript.

Hosted in the European Union 🇪🇺

Like many other projects we are hosted outside of the United States of America due to the Cloud Act. The US Cloud act allows the United States to wiretap or request personal data stored on any server even if not hosted in the United States if the company hosting it is based in the United States. Some of these requests do not even require a warrent. Because of this we've decided to avoid hosting any part of our infrastructure in the United States, both to protect this project and our users.

Commited to a Free and Open Source Tech Stack

Our tech stack is made up of free and open source software (FOSS) every point we can. From our Harmony server the software hosting our platform we strive to use FOSS licenses unless for technical constraints we can't. We do this to mitigate risks that can be introduced from non-free softwares, operating systems and firmwares.

We are commited to using Coreboot on our equipment whenever possible. Historically abuse of non-free firmware has been seen in the wild with the Superfish incident where a non-free BIOS was modifying files on on peoples hard drives.

Some of the highlights of our stack include:

  • • Firmware: Application and Database Servers uses a deblobed fork of Coreboot from 15h.org
  • • Operating System: We use Debian on all our infrastructure
  • • Web Servers/Load Balancer: A combination of haproxy and apache2
